Gothic literature motifs2/27/2023 ![]() This collection examines the early intersection of the Gothic and children’s literature and the contemporary manifestations of the gothic impulse, revealing that Gothic elements can, in fact, be traced in children’s literature for as long as children have been reading. ![]() Indeed, this does seem to be very much the way that children’s literature was marketed in the late eighteenth century, at exactly the same time that the Gothic was really taking off, written by the same women novelists who were responsible for the promotion of a safe and segregated children’s literature. The Gothic, concerned with the perverse and the forbidden, with adult sexuality and religious or metaphysical doubts and heresies, seems to represent everything that children’s literature, as a genre, was designed to keep out. The last two decades have seen an enormous growth in the critical study of two very different genres, the Gothic and children’s literature. This can be in the form of a murder or other such macabre themes laced throughout the text. From creepy picture books to Harry Potter, Lemony Snicket, the Spiderwick Chronicles, and countless vampire series for young adult readers, fear has become a dominant mode of entertainment for young readers. Macabre and morbid - No Gothic tale is complete without a little death and destruction. Omens and prophecies - The protagonist or a supporting character will often typically have distressing dreams, visions or prophecies connected to the setting or events of the story.Īgony and ecstasy - Gothic stories are often characterized by melodrama, inner turmoil, intrigue, and insanity as well as sweeping romance, grandiose passions and enchanting prose. Sometimes these supernatural figures are literal, and other times they are symbolic or have a natural explanation. Filmed at Strawberry Hill House, Twicken. Terror - The protagonist is haunted by supernatural or seemingly supernatural events such as doors suddenly closing, baying of dogs, footsteps, moans, and eerie sounds in the night. Suspense - Gothic plot lines typically revolve around suspenseful events, familial mysteries, disappearances, unexplainable events, and frightening objects. Examples include rain, storms, a chill in the air or howling wind.Īrchetypal character traits - Gothic literature typically has particular types of characters: a distressed heroine, tyrannical male characters (usually villains) and anti-heroes, also known as Byronic heroes after Romantic poet Lord Byron. Natural imagery - A hallmark of both Romanticism and Gothic literature is imagery, particularly pertaining to nature.ĭark atmosphere - No Gothic story is complete without atmosphere, including complementary weather conditions. Some common types of settings include castles, haunted houses, graveyards, and dark forests. Earthblade replacemant parts2/27/2023 ![]() ![]() By the end of the project we had a really good vibe going, and so I'm looking forward to possibly working on more things with all of them. I had been relatively familiar with their work, and got to play an early build, and thought it really gelled with the kind of music I love to write, so I said sure! It worked out super well, and I really felt like a core member of the development team. They super loved my work on Singularity, and so Matt reached out to me in a Twitter DM asking if I'd like to write the music for the game that he and the team were about six months into designing. I was friends with a number of folks in the indie scene at the time, but one of my good friends knew the developers on Celeste and she passed along my music to them. So I released four of my most solid tracks as an EP called Singularity. I had started writing a lot of electronic music, really moody deep house sort of stuff. At some point I had the inclination to branch out and do my own solo project as Kuraine. ![]() I had been working as a quest designer and level designer in AAA games, and managing to do music as a part-time thing, when I had the spare time. ![]() How did you come to compose the score for Celeste? As a side note, I'm glad I got to handle one of the trophies in dress rehearsal because I would not have been prepared for how heavy they are! It was mostly just hilarious because I had no idea if we were going to win, but then suddenly (after Ninja and a prawn Muppet hammed it up a bit) the cameras were on us and we headed up. So I was on edge already, mentally preparing to be on stage for hundreds and on camera for millions, and then being jostled around by stage folks. I then got hurriedly re-seated in case we won. But as soon as I got backstage, another stage manager came up and asked if I was part of the Celeste team. So when the Best Independent Game award started coming up, I was suddenly taken backstage by a stage manager to get ready to present the award for Best Direction. I was involved in The Game Awards as a nominee, as a performer, and as a presenter. How surreal was it to join the Celeste team onstage at The Game Awards to accept "Best Independent Game"? They run through the lifeblood of everything I write. It's probably why I'm still so adhered to games as a medium. Then, when I started writing my own music, it pulled from those sounds in a lot of major ways. My first interests in composing came from replicating the music I loved. For me, that spark was the music in games I played. I think it was inevitable that I'd become involved in music in some way. I performed in choirs from childhood up through college. My dad was performing in bars and doing sound design and composition for theater and dance while I was growing up. Music has always been a major part of my life. I love the magic that is writing music that then evokes things for people as they play through a game, enhancing the experience in ways that only an interactive medium can do.ĭo you remember what first sparked your interest in becoming a composer? It's a unique thing usually reserved for installation art that doesn't really get much appreciation. You get to score experiences and craft aural spaces that people can get lost in for hours. What is it about composing game scores that you love? Games offer something for composers that no other medium really allows you to do. Below is our archival interview from December 2018. Raine's career has significantly accelerated since the time of the below interview. Her score for CELESTE, recipient of Best Independent Game at The Game Awards and Best Score nominee, beautifully punctuated the game's highs and lows and brought its emotional aspects to their peak. Polyelectrolyte membranes (PEMs) are a novel type of material that is in high demand in health, energy and environmental sectors. If environmentally benign materials are created with biodegradable ones, PEMs can evolve into practical technology. In this work, we have fabricated environmentally safe and economic PEMs based on sulfonate grafted sodium alginate (SA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Here, though, said stills don’t seem to always fit what’s being said, especially when there are very few to go around. Games don’t need to have fully-animated cutscenes, and explaining story beats with hand-painted stills can be a lovely way to go (looking at you, Supergiant). It doesn’t help, either, that Shadwen’s presentation leaves a bit to be desired. Whenever you choose to fatally dispatch an enemy, you will be warned via text bubble that seeing a dead body will traumatize and terrify Lily, which will affect the ending of the game. She is literally nothing more than a tool with legs and an inconvenient one, at that. In my time with Shadwen, I saw her run into the path of guards numerous times, turn around in plain sight of them, and return to whatever haystack she had been biding her time in. She’s never in any real danger, as guards don’t even notice her. The central problem around Lily, though, is that she feels utterly valueless past this superficial level. You have to keep her alongside you, though, as progression is utterly impossible without a second pair of hands. Lily isn’t particularly useful, existing only to occasionally help you open a door or…open a door. Her name is Lily, and she’s an orphan girl who Shadwen inexplicably decides to take with her on her journey. This is all shaping up to sound like an overarchingly fun stealth experience, but there’s an elephant in the room. So, you’ve got your stealth route and your straight-up murder options, right? The game even lets you craft a couple more items as you progress, such as a poison dart trap or a decoy. If they see your handiwork, they’ll be ringing alarm bells faster than you can say “I wonder when Dishonored 2 is supposed to come out.” Beware, though, as any corpse left freshly murdered may be noticed by another guard. Shadwen also has a knife, which means eliminating soldiers in a more direct way is also an option. There’s haystacks and bushes to hide in, rafters to grapple up onto, and, most usefully, a whole bunch of boxes and barrels to push around, all in the name of distracting the dudes who so rudely want to foil Shadwen’s purely recreational king-killing exploits. With that in mind, it’s important to keep an eye out for the environmental assets laid out for maximum sneakage. Every guard in the game is armed with a crossbow, and is an expert shot as soon as they see Shadwen scurrying about. Levels consist of series of roads, tunnels, corridors and the like, all full of guards to avoid and obstacles to overcome. There’s also the option to rewind time if you get killed, ready to trace your actions all the way back to the start of the level if need be. Shadwen herself can sneak, run, jump, and swing from a grappling hook to get where she needs to go. ![]() In theory, this is an awesome decision for a stealth game, as it gives the player time to stop, assess, and strategize at any time, all while still presenting challenge in motion. Time only moves when the player character, Shadwen herself, is in motion, or when a button is held down to make time pass. Shadwen is immediately interesting as a stealth game, due to the way things move – and don’t move – around the player. Welcome to Shadwen, assassins and assassinettes. If you’ll excuse the pun, it doesn’t seem that the team was “Trine” very hard at all when making this thing, which takes a concept potential and turns it into a 6-hour chore. If you find that imagining all of these things in conjunction feels familiar, chances are pretty good that you’ve been playing Shadwen, the new game by the guys behind Trine. Now imagine a world where you decide to take a child along for the ride, for no reason other than that you find her love of apples endearing. Imagine a world where you can start and stop time at will as you sneak, swing, and strike your way to your opponents. Imagine a world with a corrupt king at its head, so cruel in his workings that you feel you must take it upon yourself to take him down. ![]() New gran turismo 7 ps42/27/2023 ![]() ![]() However, fans of either franchise know what to expect from each game, so that difference probably isn’t enough to sway them either way - especially if they’re console loyalists.
